<h1>The Basics of Balance</h1>

<p>Balance is easy to take for granted; after all, our every movement relies upon it in some fashion. Most of the time, we only notice balance when it fails us &#8211; like when we trip for &#8220;no reason&#8221; or find ourselves leaning slightly to the left or right while standing. Actually, without balance, we couldn&#8217;t do much at all, which is why it&#8217;s so important to build a foundation of proper balance, particularly as we age. Let&#8217;s learn more about the fundamentals of balance.</p>
</div>
<p><em>Balance:</em> When you look up the word in the dictionary, there are more than two dozen ways it can be used; for the purpose of this discussion, let&#8217;s consider balance as it relates to our physical structure. Balance is controlled by three distinct systems: the visual system (eyes), the vestibular system (inner ear) and<em>proprioception</em> [proh-pree-<em>uh</em>-sep-sh<em>uhn</em>] &#8211; a very complex system of sensors in the skin, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments that are responsible for you feeling vibration, pressure and the overall awareness of the position of your body.</p>
<p>If you lift your hand above your head, you are aware of the fact that it is above your head; you can sense it being there because of proprioception. If you stand very still and pay attention to your body movements, you can sense subtle motions of leaning back and forth as your body gently sways. Your eyes, the fluid-filled canals in your ears and the sensors in your feet are telling the brain which muscles to contract to keep you standing upright with your eyes level with the horizon. If you close your eyes, removing one of the senses that is keeping you upright, you are likely to sway more dramatically and could even fall. <em>(Be careful if you try this exercise. Stand next to something you can hang onto if you need to!)</em>Sometimes an ear infection can cause one to feel dizzy; that is because the brain is getting distorted information about balance.</p>

<p><strong>How We Develop Balance</strong></p>
<p>Balance is an inborn characteristic that starts developing shortly after birth. As eyesight improves, the muscles of the neck develop as a child explores their new world and eventually is able to lift their head, which begins the development of the forward curve in the neck. This is followed by creeping and crawling, during which the curve in the low back is formed. This is all necessary for the ultimate act of balance to occur: standing. Standing is followed by falling (over and over again) as the brain is flooded with information regarding where we are in space. All of this information ultimately is used to initiate the first steps of walking (however uncoordinated they may be). You can see the efficiency develop and soon the walking turns into running.</p>
<p><strong>Feet: The Foundation of Proper Balance</strong></p>
<p>The feet are very important in balance and posture because they are loaded with proprioceptive sensors. These sensors are constantly sending signals to the brain, which then sends signals back down the spinal column to the muscles telling them when to contract and when to relax. Every movement from standing to walking, running and jumping are controlled by this system.</p>
<p>How efficiently the joints of the spine work are directly affected by the feet. There are three arches in each foot that serve as the foundation of the entire body. Studies have shown that nearly 80 percent of the population has lost some or all of the support in those arches. When that happens, it creates physical stress in the feet, knees, hips, pelvis and spine, as well as an abnormal amount of stress on the special receptors in the feet that are trying to communicate with the brain. This physical stress can contribute to degenerative arthritis, while the neurological stress can interfere with normal muscle function.</p>
<p>When this happens, the bones of the body can become slightly misaligned; this is what might be seen as a postural distortion. These seemingly minor &#8220;misalignments&#8221; are often not painful but are the beginning of the slow-developing wear and tear called osteoarthritis.</p>
<p>This is the wear-and-tear arthritis many people associate with &#8220;old age&#8221; and is responsible for knee and hip degeneration, spinal disc degeneration, as well as the deformity in the upper spine called Dowager&#8217;s Hump.</p>
<p><strong>The Road to Better Balance</strong></p>
<p>In chiropractic, balance is the focus of postural alignment, muscular strength and flexibility. We know it has a profound impact on the health of our nervous system, and how well we age can actually determine if we suffer with some forms of arthritis in our later years. Regular chiropractic adjustments ensure that all of the signals between the body and brain that facilitate proper balance travel back and forth without interruption. Research has shown that joints in the body that don&#8217;t move freely turn off those signals that enhance balance. So, if your joints are not working optimally, then your balance is most certainly affected!</p>

<p>Balance can diminish over time and is often complicated by neurological deficits related to diabetic neuropathy, dementia, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries or tumors and degenerative changes in the spine and extremities. For older patients who suffer from these types of disorders, it is important to remember that in many cases they do respond positively to chiropractic care. Typically improvements in proprioception and balance are quite achievable. Better balance could be the difference in avoiding a devastating fall, which is particularly important as we age.</p>
<p>Many chiropractors are specially trained to <a href="http://www.toyourhealth.com/mpacms/tyh/article.php?id=897">evaluate the structural integrity of the arches of the feet</a> to see if they are a contributing factor to postural stress. Supporting the arches of the feet with a custom-made orthotic device (insert) that you wear in your shoes has been shown to block the abnormal foot motions that create a twisting stress in the knee, hip, pelvis and spine and that improves balance and posture. The messages sent from the feet to the brain are done so more efficiently when the arches are properly supported. This support is best implemented as early as age 6, but can be helpful to anyone who would benefit from improved balance and posture.</p>
<p>Balance and posture should be considered an important part of everyone&#8217;s fitness from the time we are young. All of the suggestions in this article will definitely help improve your balance and muscular coordination. Don&#8217;t be surprised if you notice a difference in your day-to-day activities or sports activities. You will feel stronger and more coordinated. Most importantly, you will have taken a big step in preserving the health of your spine by improving your balance.</p>
<hr /><strong>Balance Exercises: A Four-Step Progression</strong></p>
<p>In addition to chiropractic adjustments and spinal pelvic stabilization with orthotic inserts, there are <a href="http://www.toyourhealth.com/mpacms/tyh/article.php?id=1220">certain activities that promote balance</a> and don&#8217;t require any special equipment:</p>
<ul>
<li>Begin by standing on one leg for 30 seconds and then shift to the other side. Practice this until you can consistently stand on each leg without losing your balance.</li>
<li>Stand on one leg with your arms crossed for 30 seconds and then do the same while standing on the other leg. Crossing the arms adds complexity to the amount of information going to the brain from the sensors in the muscles and joints.</li>
<li>Stand on one leg with your eyes closed for 30 seconds. (Be sure you are in an area where you can support yourself if needed. Stand next to a doorway or have a chair available to reach out to for support.) Repeat with the other side. Closing the eyes increases the difficulty of the exercise by removing one of the systems of balance.</li>
<li>Stand on one leg, close your eyes and cross your arms for 30 seconds. <p>I wanted to share a no nonsense approach to achieving your goals because most of the new years resolutions that we made on Jan. 1 have been forgotten about and are long gone. I read a great article in our To Your Heath Newsletter that I wanted to share with you.  <strong>David Kent, LMT, NCTMB,</strong> is a massage therapist, writer, educator and international lecturer. He practices in Deltona, Fla., and is the founder and president of Kent Health Systems. He wrote the following article:</p>
<p><strong>The Smarter Approach to Achieving Your Goals</strong></p>
<p><em>By David Kent</em></p>
<p><em>If you are anything like me, you have a to-do list of projects you are never quite able to finish &#8211; or sometimes even start. Perhaps some of these items have been on your list for months or even years, but a lack of time or other circumstance has prevented you from moving on them. Let&#8217;s take a look at the SMARTER way to organize and complete those items on your to-do list without further delay.</em></p>
<p><strong>Specific</strong></p>
<p>To focus your efforts and begin moving in the right direction, you first need to be specific about each of your goals. Thinking about your goals is good; however, writing them down in specific detail is the only way to clearly define them and solidify them in your mind. When putting your goals to paper, make sure they are straightforward and free of ambiguity. For example, instead of: &#8220;I want to lose weight,&#8221; try: &#8220;I will lose 10 pounds over the next 10 weeks.&#8221; Instead of: &#8220;I want to save more money,&#8221; try: &#8220;I will increase my savings by $2,500 over the next 12 months.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Measurable</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;ve heard it said that if you can&#8217;t measure it, you can&#8217;t manage it. Reviewing your goals and documenting or measuring your progress daily will help you to make the choices that continually point you in the right direction. For example, documenting your workouts and the foods and drinks that pass through your lips, as well as using the same scale to weigh yourself, are ways to measure your progress toward your weight-loss goal. You&#8217;ll also confirm your measurable progress by noting how well your clothes fit, the numbers on the scale and how you feel about your accomplishments.</p>
<p>To measure your financial goals, you&#8217;ll have to track your spending versus your income or find other measurable ways to track what factors can increase your ability to save money in the short and long term. Paying off debt, opening a savings or retirement account, or investing in tools and/or seminars that increase and improve your knowledge, thereby adding to your marketable skill set, are all effective methods of measuring your financial progress.</p>
<p><strong>Attainable</strong></p>
<p>Is your goal realistically attainable? Using weight loss as the example again, if you are naturally stocky or big-boned, for example, setting a weight-loss goal that would be difficult for a supermodel to achieve isn&#8217;t realistic and probably not attainable. In fact, setting unrealistic goals likely will result in burnout and failure. However, losing 10 pounds and improving your all-around level of fitness are definitely attainable goals. It&#8217;s also important to identify realistic, attainable actions that you can take to move you toward your goal. For example:</p>
<ul>
<li><em>Problem:</em> Sweets and snacks pose a weakness for me; I find it hard not to give in to temptation.</li>
<li><em>Solution:</em> I&#8217;ll avoid those aisles at the grocery store so I won&#8217;t be tempted to buy those foods.</li>
<li><em>Problem: </em>I tend to overeat when I dine out.</li>
<li><em>Solution</em>: Before my food is brought to the table, I&#8217;ll ask the server to pack up half of my meal in a to-go container.</li>
</ul>
<p>Financial goals can be attained easily by realizing that consistent efforts can produce big returns. For example, making or saving an additional $50 a week x 4 weeks = approximately $200 a month x 12 months = $2,400 a year. Another $200 a week x 50 working weeks a year = $10,000 additional in annual income.</p>
<p>Instead of working twice as hard to earn more, it&#8217;s easier to improve your bottom line by simply spending less. Is this an attainable goal? Sure! Buy in bulk from wholesalers and save on all kinds of everyday items you and your family use frequently.</p>
<p>Watch for special offers and use discount codes whenever possible. Also re-evaluate what you have purchased in the past and ask yourself if purchasing the same item(s) is the best choice moving forward.</p>
<p><strong>Reasonable</strong></p>
<p>both the short and long term. Create a separate &#8220;do-able&#8221; action plan for each project by making a list of two short-term and two long-term goals related to the project. Next, list the tasks required to complete each short-term and long-term goal. By outlining your goals and each task needed to achieve them, you will have created a detailed blueprint to navigate your course. The key here, of course, is to make sure you are using reasonable methods to attain your goals.</p>
<p>Part of your action plan for losing weight might include getting some form of exercise every day, drinking more water and using smaller plates. Are these lifestyle changes reasonable and sustainable? If so, you are on your way to permanently achieving your goal. If not, you&#8217;ll need to determine what steps are reasonable to you. Perhaps it&#8217;s more reasonable if you allow yourself one &#8220;cheat&#8221; day a week. Is setting aside $50 a week reasonable for moving you toward your financial goals? If not, how about $20 a week? Again, you must find what works for your specific situation.</p>
<p><strong>Timely</strong></p>
<p>To successfully achieve your goals, you must set completion dates. Setting time lines for each task gives you clear targets and deadlines. Without completion dates, your goal will always be open ended and much more likely to remain unachieved. Set a realistic time frame for completion and move forward every day until your goal is reached.</p>
<p><strong>Evaluate</strong></p>
<p>To determine if you are on track toward accomplishing your goals, you should review and evaluate your efforts many times a day; at least at first. The more you review your goals and focus on the actions you need to take to achieve them, the sooner your goals will become a reality. Continually evaluating your progress will also help reveal your weak points and identify the areas that need improving. This process also helps you evaluate if your time and efforts are being spent wisely. One rule of thumb is to focus 80 percent of your time and energy on 20 percent of the things that produce the greatest results. This is also known as the 80/20 rule.</p>
<p><strong>Reorganize</strong></p>
<p>Once you have determined what works and what doesn&#8217;t, make the necessary adjustments to your approach to maintain focus and stay on track. Continue to regroup and reorganize your efforts until you know you are on a stable path toward success. If something isn&#8217;t helping you achieve a particular goal, rethink the process and find a better way.</p>
<p>The SMARTER approach to achieving your goals is similar to cooking. First you need to know what you are cooking (Specific). Then you pull together the amounts (Measurable) of each ingredient (Attainable), and bake everything at a specific temperature for a determined (Reasonable) length of time (Timely). Then you taste (Evaluate) the food and finally decide how you will modify (Reorganize) your recipe to improve on your next attempt. <p>Dealing With a Pain in the Neck<br />
Have You Tried Training Your Deep Neck Muscles?</p>

If you&#8217;re suffering from chronic neck pain, you definitely know it: Chronic neck pain is pain in the neck that lasts (off and on) for more than six months, and an estimated seven in 10 adults develop it at some point in their lives. The big question, of course, is what can you do about it? Fortunately, neck pain is usually treated effectively by chiropractors. In fact, recent guidelines on neck pain point to spinal manipulation as a recommended treatment option. It&#8217;s also important to recognize that another recommendation is exercise, many of which can be performed at home. Let&#8217;s take a look at how the neck muscles relate to neck pain and what you can do about it.</p>
<p>What do you think of when I tell you I&#8217;m going to give you exercises for your neck pain? Do you expect advice on general stretches or instruction sheets with simple exercises? Perhaps you have a vision of weights attached to your head like the weight-lifters you may have seen in an old movie. The reality is that neck exercises can be gentle and easy to do, and don&#8217;t usually require a lot of equipment or time. It begins by understanding why exercises are important for relieving neck pain in the first place.</p>
<p>In general, there is no one cause of neck pain that applies to every patient. If you have chronic neck pain, you may have received a diagnosis of disc herniation, whiplash, strain, sprain or something else. Regardless, most of these conditions have one thing in common: Certain muscles are affected, and these are the muscles we need to target before progressing to more challenging exercises or activities.</p>
<p>Neck pain 1 There are certain muscles in the neck that are designed to help us maintain our normal and healthy curve of the spine. In addition, these muscles are designed to hold our head up all day. The technical names of these muscles are the longus capitus and longus colli, more commonly known as the deep neck flexors. They are the muscles that attach to the front of your spine. Because they&#8217;re located deep in the front of the neck, we often ignore them. As they say, &#8220;Out of sight, out of mind,&#8221; but they&#8217;re important muscles to consider whenever you&#8217;re suffering from neck pain.</p>
<p>In people with chronic neck pain, these muscles are often fatigued a lot quicker than in people without neck pain. That means other muscles pick up the slack and begin working harder. The muscles that begin working harder are the ones we generally end up stretching. Have you ever noticed that when you stretch stiff muscles, they feel good for a short period of time, only to get tight again? The thing is, if you don&#8217;t address the other muscles, the ones that get fatigued and gradually stop working, then your stretching program will not work as well. All these muscles need to be in &#8220;balance.&#8221;</p>
<p>The best way to see if your deep neck flexors fatigue is to try and lift your head off the ground when you are lying down. The technique is simple: Simply tuck your chin in to your chest and lift your head off the ground, and then attempt to hold it there for 10 seconds. If the neck begins shaking, or your chin is unable to stay tucked in, your deep flexors are fatigued and need to be addressed.</p>
<p>For most people with chronic neck pain, this can be a difficult exercise. That&#8217;s why you can begin your exercise program by doing simple chin tucks while sitting or standing.<br />
Simply tucking your chin in and holding it until you fatigue will help reactivate these muscles. You can start with 12 repetitions of this exercise, working your way up to three sets of 12 repetitions each. Ensure you take adequate rest (several minutes) in between each set.</p>
<p>Once you get comfortable with basic sitting/standing chin tucks, you can try doing the exercise lying down. The goal is to be able to do it 12 times, holding each one until you fatigue. The next goal is to work your way up to three sets of 12 repetitions, with rest in between each set. Then work your way to three sets of 15 repetitions and then three sets of 20 repetitions. Remember, this is a marathon, not a race. The goal is to increase the endurance of your muscles rather than their strength. Your neck is designed to carry the weight of your head all day, not to lift trains or buses! That&#8217;s why building up endurance should be your first priority.</p>
<p>Remember, the neck muscles are like any other muscle in our body. With long-term pain or injury, the muscles get weak and get tired quicker. By first &#8220;balancing&#8221; the weak muscles and increasing their endurance, you will be prepared to progress to more challenging strengthening exercises. As research and guidelines conclude, combining this with your chiropractic care will lead to the best outcomes and improvement in your chronic neck pain.</p>
